A preparatory sketch for a larger painting of the rocks in my local beach at St Margaret’s Bay, Dover. I’ve tried to use oils in a very watercolour like light flowing manner. I’m still trying to work on the composition. There is so much around, I have to be selective about what I want put in the painting. I want it to have a surreal quality as the beach under the cliffs with its bed of rocks stretching out towards the water. They lie motionless like some prehistoric creatures turned to stone many thousands of years ago when there were no ships or boats or planes and bombs. They’ve slept through it all but still remind of the virgin lands where cliffs were formed and land divided.
